Something for Everyone at UUMC

Autumn is approaching in Chapel Hill, and bringing with it the sights and sounds of a new year. We may celebrate New Year’s Day in January, but in Chapel Hill, August and September bring new beginnings.

College freshmen come to campus, eager to srart a new chapter of their lives. Upperclassmen return, anxious to see old friends, meet new friends and continue learning and growing in what has become their new home. Children and youth head back to school, a year older and wiser, ready to see what the year holds.

Fall has a different sound. Music drifts through the air as the UNC band practices on the lawn adjacent to UUMC. The Chancel Choir makes a joyful noise to the Lord, learning new hymns and helping lead the congregation in worship each Sunday.  The Youth Choir and children’s choirs begin rehearsing. A festive atmosphere arrives, just ahead of fall’s cooler temperatures.

At UUMC, we celebrate fall’s beginnings with two weekly worship services, with new Bible studies and Sunday School classes. We begin a new school year with more opportunities to serve and to fellowship together. Kids and adults, youth and college students, can all find something just for them at UUMC.

Sunday School classes for children and youth begin on August 29. Children and youth will meet from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in classes designed for their age groups, where they will grow in their faith and friendships. Infants and 1-year-olds will find a safe haven and loving caretakers in the nursery. Also that day, there will be an adult Sunday School fellowship in the parlors, giving adults a chance to learn more about the classes offered this fall. Adult classes will begin on September 5.

College Café, which will once again be led by two college students, will start on September 12. Adults can sign up now (by contacting Joy Renner at 336-376-0505) to provide lunch for the students attending this college Sunday School class, which will meet weekly after the 10:55 a.m. worship service.

Bible studies also start in September. The Pastors’ Bible Study, which meets on Tuesday mornings, will start again on September 21. The Women’s Bible Study meets weekly on Wednesday mornings, beginning on September 8. The Men’s Bible Study meets on the third Monday of each month and new Disciple Bible Studies will be offered on Wednesday evenings and Thursday afternoons. The GAP group will meet on Tuesday nights, and small groups will be available for youth. The Children’s Bible Study kicks off the fall on September 19.

UMW Circles (contact Pat Lopp: 968-347) will resume their fall activities. The United Methodist Men will write “Letters from Dad.” Men and women, adults and children, will serve our neighbors in need. The church will come together to host a community yard sale on Saturday, September 25, providing resources for those around us and raising money for missions.

Get involved! Watch for more information. Browse this website or call the church office (929-7191) to learn more about how you can participate in the life of the church this fall.
